Leon Chaitow,Christopher Gilbert,Dinah Bradley: Recognizing and Treating Breathing Disorders: A Multidisciplinary Approach

Recognizing and Treating Breathing Disorders: A Multidisciplinary Approach

Description

Disordered breathing patterns may be a symptom or a cause of frequently undiagnosed health problems. A significant proportion of the population worldwide suffers from breathing pattern disorders, particularly in the more developed countries. Accordingly, a wide range of practitioners encounter these problems, often without having received any prior training in their causation or management. This book is intended to help practitioners understand the causes and effects of disordered breathing and to provide strategies and protocols to help restore normal function. Fully updated throughout, this volume has been completely revised to guide the practitioner in the recognition of breathing pattern disorders and presents the latest research findings relating to the condition including a range of completely new techniques - many from an international multidisciplinary perspective - to help restore and maintain normal functionality. The volume also provides an overview of the underlying anatomy, physiology and basic biochemistry associated with breathing. Chapters then examine the psychological and emotional variables associated with disordered breathing together with assessment protocols taken from a variety of perspectives - including Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization methods, osteopathic, physiotherapeutic, and psychological methods. Comprehensively covering a range of interventions suitable for use in a variety of settings - including the use of techniques in patients with longstanding pain disorders - the book concludes with chapters on speech and singing, breathing disorders in the athlete, and looks at the importance of breathing techniques in relation to Feldenkrais(R), Pilates, Tai chi Qigong and yoga. "This is not a perfect all-encompassing textbook. That was not its purpose. As a catalyst for stimulating further exploration and for use as a reference in clinical work of wide-ranging paradigms it succeeds admirably." Reviewed by: David Propert, British School of Osteopathy, UK, International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine Date: Aug 2014

William Wordsworth,Samuel Taylor Coleridge,Martin Scofield: Lyrical Ballads & Other Poems

Lyrical Ballads & Other Poems

Description

With an Introduction and Notes by Martin Scofield. Lyrical Ballads (1798 and 1800) constituted a quiet poetic revolution, both in its attitude to its subject-matter and its anti-conventional language. Those volumes and Wordsworth's and Coleridge's other major poems were central to the Romantic period and remain classic texts in our own time. Wordsworth focuses on 'the essential passions of the heart' and achieves a penetrating insight into love and death, solitude and community. Coleridge explores a more fantastic and dreamlike imagination and also writes poems of quiet, conversational meditation. Both poets look with a fresh and visionary eye at the human and the natural world. They examine the condition of men and women at the extreme edge of society; they are also subtle analysts of their own minds and the processes of introspection and memory. This volume contains all of Lyrical Ballads (1798) with Wordsworth's Preface of 1800/1802, and a wide-ranging selection of both poet's other work, including virtually all their best known and discussed shorter poems.

Contributors to the volume offer diverse but complementary perspectives on which issues and factors are most important in explaining how security politics in Asia can be interpreted at both the regional and global levels of analysis. Issues addressed include power balancing and alliances, governance and democracy, maritime and energy security, the relationship between economics and security, 'human security', terrorism, nuclear non-proliferation, climate change and pandemics. This work will serve as a standard reference on the evolution of key issues in Asian security.

Philip K. Dick: Counter-Clock World

Counter-Clock World

Description

Pre-empting novels such as the Booker Prize-winning 'Time's Arrow' by as much as twenty years, Counter-Clock world is a story of racial tensions told against the background of the year 1998 in which time flows in reverse as people are born old only to grow younger and younger. Time runs backwards in the Counter-Clock World. Old people emerge from their graves, grow to middle age, youth, adolescence and childhood to be finally unborn in their mothers wombs. The most powerful - and most feared - organisation in the world is the Library, in charge of expunging the written records of events, which have no longer happened. When a powerful black leader is reborn, the Library's one concern is to eliminate him before the renewal of racial violence tears the country apart. But in this counter-clock year of 1998 it isn't that simple...This eerie and unforgettable premise encapsulates Philip K Dick's ambitious and inimitable approach to fiction writing. The attempts of his characters to cope with the bizarre reality of a world that runs backwards while their minds run forwards like ours, operate as a stunning critique of the way in which we perceive our own civilization.

Why do some children succeed while others fail? The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: success comes to those who score highest on tests, from Counter-Clock World pdf preschool admissions to SATs. Bertrand Russell,Samuel Brittan: Power: A New Social Analysis

Power: A New Social Analysis

Description

The key to human nature that Marx found in wealth and Freud in sex, Bertrand Russell finds in power. Power, he argues, is man's ultimate goal, and is, in its many guises, the single most important element in the development of any society. Writting in the late 1930s when Europe was being torn apart by extremist ideologies and the world was on the brink of war, Russell set out to found a 'new science' to make sense of the traumatic events of the day and explain those that would follow. The result was Power, a remarkable book that Russell regarded as one of the most important of his long career. Countering the totalitarian desire to dominate, Russell shows how political enlightenment and human understanding can lead to peace - his book is a passionate call for independence of mind and a celebration of the instinctive joy of human life.

Conor McPherson: The Weir

The Weir

Description

Set in a bar in a remote part of Ireland, The Weir tells of a young woman who has a story to frighten the locals out of their lives.

'I liked this book. Though I am not a family therapist, like most mental health nurses, I try to bear in mind the family relationships of individuals I am working with. This is an enlightening text which not only offer a framework with which we can better understand the severe psychopathologies seen in forensic work, but also gives examples of how it may be used therapeutically' - "Mental Health Practice". 'I think this is an important book that crystallises complex theory into a user-friendly model, using case material and discussions from the therapeutic community. A must have for counsellors working with families, this will form part of the recommended reading on the Family Counselling course' - Barbara McKay, Relate Head of Training, Relate News. 'The book The Weir download ebook provides a good overview of a number of recent approaches to working with families as well as how the author thinks about them' - Stephen Bray, "Nurturing Potential".'Roger Lowe achieves the almost impossible task of bringing together various theories, techniques and case examples in clear and accessible ways.

Paul Dourish: Where the Action is: The Foundations of Embodied Interaction

Where the Action is: The Foundations of Embodied Interaction

Description

Computer science as an engineering discipline has been spectacularly successful. Yet it is also a philosophical enterprise in the way it represents the world and creates and manipulates models of reality, people, and action. In this book, Paul Dourish addresses the philosophical bases of human-computer interaction. He looks at how what he calls "embodied interaction" -- an approach to interacting with software systems that emphasizes skilled, engaged practice rather than disembodied rationality -- reflects the phenomenological approaches of Martin Heidegger, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and other twentieth-century philosophers. The phenomenological tradition emphasizes the primacy of natural practice over abstract cognition in everyday activity. Dourish shows how this perspective can shed light on the foundational underpinnings of current research on embodied interaction. He looks in particular at how tangible and social approaches to interaction are related, how they can be used to analyze and understand embodied interaction, and how they could affect the design of future interactive systems.

We are spurred into action by our troubles and fears; but all too often our action fails to address the true causes of our worries. When trying to make sense of our lives, we tend to blame our own failings and weaknesses for our discomforts and defeats. And in doing so, we make things worse rather than better. Reasonable beings that we are, how does this Where the Action is: The Foundations of Embodied Interaction pdf happen and why does it go on happening? These are the questions addressed in this new book by Zygmunt Bauman -- one of the most original and perceptive social thinkers writing today. For Bauman, the task of sociology is not to censor or correct the stories we tell of our lives, but to show that there are more ways in which our life stories can be told. By bringing into view the many complex dependencies invisible from the vantage point of private experience, sociology can help us to link our individual decisions and actions to the deeper causes of our troubles and fears -- to the ways we live, to the conditions under which we act, to the socially drawn limits of our imagination and ambition.

The Invisible Man

Description

The Penguin English Library Edition of The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells 'People screamed. People sprang off the pavement ..."The Invisible Man is coming! The Invisible Man!"' With his face swaddled in bandages, his eyes hidden behind dark glasses and his hands covered even indoors, Griffin - the new guest at The Coach and Horses - is at first assumed to be a shy accident-victim. But the true reason for his disguise is far more chilling: he has developed a process that has made him invisible, and is locked in a struggle to discover the antidote. Forced from the village, and driven to murder, he seeks the aid of an old friend, Kemp. The horror of his fate has affected his mind, however - and when Kemp refuse to help, he resolves to wreak his revenge. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

Naturalist, philosopher, champion of self-reliance and moral independence, Henry David Thoreau remains not only one of our most influential writers but also one of our most contemporary. This unique and comprehensive edition gathers all of Thoreau s most significant works, including his masterpiece, "Walden" (reproduced in its entirety); "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers;" selections from "Cape Cod" and "The Maine Woods; "as well as Walking, Civil Disobedience, Slavery in Massachusetts, A Plea for Captain John Brown, and Life Without Principle. Taken together, they reveal the astounding range, subtlety, artistry, and depth of thought of this true American original. British detective Fiona Griffiths, one of the most engaging female The Invisible Man download ebook pdf protagonists in crime thrillers, is back with her toughest case yet. When the body of a young woman is found in an old 'dead house' - the annexe where the dead were stored before burial in medieval times - of a tiny church in a small town in Wales, it seems that past and present have come together in a bizarre and horrifying way. For DC Fiona Griffiths, the girl - a murder victim whose corpse was laid out with obvious tenderness - represents an irresistibly intriguing puzzle, given Fiona's unusual empathy for the dead. And when her investigations lead her to an obscure and secretive monastery hidden in a remote valley, she finds that the murder victim is far from the only victim of a dark and disturbing melding of modern crime and medieval religious practices. Only Fiona is capable of solving this brilliantly crafted mystery.

Katherine Ramsland: The Forensic Psychology of Criminal Minds

The Forensic Psychology of Criminal Minds

Description

The bestselling author of "The Forensic Science of C.S.I." examines the real-life cases behind the hit television series "Criminal Minds" Week after week, the hit TV show "Criminal Minds" gives viewers a look inside the psyches of the fictional serial killers tracked by the BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit). This elite team of FBI agents travels the country assisting law enforcement officials by examining the crime scene, "profiling" the perpetrator, and aiding in arrest and interrogation. In this book Katherine Ramsland reveals how reality differs from fiction and how forensic psychologists actually use their knowledge of human behavior and motivations as consultants in criminal investigations-as well as detailing the real cases that influenced some of "Criminal Minds"'s most memorable episodes.

First Runner-Up in the 2006 Writer's Notes Book Awards, this book utilizes the strengths of children with ASD to help them develop new skills. Tasks are visually oriented, consistent; expectations are clear. Children learn motor, matching, sorting, reading, writing, and math skills using easy-to-make 'task boxes'. Tasks include pushing items through a small openings (children love the 'resistance' it takes to push them through); matching simple, identical pictures or words; sorting objects by color, size, or shape. Ideas are plentiful, materials colorful, and children love the repetitive nature of the 'tasks', which help them learn to work independently! Sample data sheets are included. What s better than a lost treasure? Seven lost treasures! These rarely seen Dr. Seuss stories were published in magazines in the early 1950s and are finally available in book form. They include The Bippolo Seed (in which a scheming feline leads a duck toward a bad decision), The Rabbit, the Bear, and the Zinniga-Zanniga (about a rabbit who is saved from a bear by a single eyelash), Gustav, the Goldfish (an early rhymed version of the Beginner Book "A Fish Out of Water"), Tadd and Todd (about a twin who is striving to be an individual), Steak for Supper (in which fantastic creatures follow a boy home in anticipation of a steak dinner), The Strange Shirt Spot (the inspiration for the bathtub-ring scene in "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back"), and The Great Henry McBride (about a boy whose far-flung career fantasies are bested only by those of Dr. Seuss himself). An introduction by Seuss scholar Charles D. Cohen traces the history of the stories, which demonstrate an intentional move toward the writing style we now associate with Dr. Seuss. Cohen also explores the themes that recur in well-known Seuss stories (like The Forensic Psychology of Criminal Minds free download pdf the importance of the imagination or the perils of greed). With a color palette enhanced beyond the limitations of the original magazines, this is a collection that no Seuss fan (whether scholar or second grader) will want to miss."
